  • The Interior Design/Nursing Parallax

OR  Nurse! Nurse! Should I go with the Chartreuse or the Puce? Okay so I am guilty of being obtusely acerbic. While I take the issue of ID professionalism very seriously I have to humor myself to make it fun….at least for me.   What the profession (as defined by NCIDQ) of Interior Design is dealing with is…

  • Blowback in Minnesota

While the pro-regulation effort in Minnesota is underway there is also a concerted effort to derail any propsed legislation. Interestingly the NKBA is the prime detractor or anti-regulation proponent. Frankly the anti’s have a more effective campaign. Note I did not judge whether they are correct or not. But it does not take a rocket…

  • ASID & IIDA or ASID vs. IIDA?

So this is where I really step in it…er on it..whatever. Others have discreetly discussed it behind closed doors. There have been some high level back room discussions over many years and some of my fellow academics have written an impassioned and scholarly vetted plea for the need of one organization to represent the professional domain of…

  • Apathy May Be Our Worst Enemy

Seems like a potential colossal waste of time to implement legislation and then not have the critical mass of participation to empower the state’s design professionals. I can only assume that ASID and IIDA are on alert.

  • But…But….What About Grandma?

So for all of you who read the depositions from the Institute for Justice’s lawsuit in Florida (I am sure you all read them…right?;-) you probably noted that the wily strategic litigators at the IJ are trying to turn the issue of “grandfathering” around to haunt us. Grandfather clauses are common additions to proposed bills that provide an…

  • INTERIOR DESIGNERS ARE HOT!!!(?)

So interior design is a hot career option eh? http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/career-articles-the_most_secure_jobs_for_2010-1074 Well that is certainly good news for my students! I do note that the salary level is the lowest of the 8 careers noted. I will blame this on our collective inability to achieve a level of respect for our skills and knowledge. There are a lot…

  • Interior Design Regulation- Domestic Professional Myopia

Don’t you think that if we all joined together to define our domain that the collective critical mass of like-minded individuals around the world could take the profession far beyond the next level, that our petty semantic and turf disputes would seem rather….well petty? Some call me a dreamer.

  • It’s not a profession…It’s a friggin Hobby!

http://www.theinteriordesigninstitute.com/index.cfm I can remember when you could get a diploma in interior design off the back of a matchbook. In fact I think that is what sparked (pun intended) the 37 year old effort to regulate interior design in the first place. My how times don’t change.

  • The Right to Practice

The only argument for government regulation of Interior Design that has some merit is the so called right to practice as a licensed professional.  This is very well described in this article claiming interior designers should have dibs on government work that involves interior design- makes sense. http://www.massrealestatelawblog.com/an-interior-designer-talks-about-legislation-recognizing-the-profession-and-enabling-designers-to-bid-on-state-contracts/ There are also some right to practice issues…

  • RESIDENTIAL vs. COMMERCIAL- IS THERE A DIFFERENCE?

The idealist in me says “NO”.  A qualified interior designer is able to properly design interior spaces regardless of the function. Does not matter if it is a space for living, a space for healing, a space for fellowship or a space for work.  There are single family residences with spectacular office spaces and commercial grade kitchens. We all know…
